“Chocolate” Cake

I love making things for friends.  I wanted to make something fun for another friends birthday.  I decided to do a “chocolate” cake.  And when I say “chocolate”, I mean the cake is solid chocolate!

I wanted the “cake” to look like it was frosted with sprinkles so I got some of the color burst melting chocolates for my base.  I took some of the brights and the pastels and placed in a microwave safe bowl and heated for 1 minute.  Then stirred and heated another 30 seconds.  Because of this type of chocolate I needed to add another 30 seconds to make sure I had all the pieces melted.  I poured some of my melted chocolate into a round plastic bowl and rolled the bowl around to coat the inside.  This went into the freezer for about 5 minutes.  I added more chocolate to get a good thickness since this is going to be the outside of the cake.

Next I took some milk chocolate and melted it the same way.  I added some chopped pecans to the melted chocolate and poured that into my bowl and put in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

Then I took some Jet-Puff marshmallow cream and Nutella and put each into ziplock bags. I find if you microwave these just a little it’s easier to squeeze out of the bag.  I heated the Nutella for about 20 seconds.  The Jet-Puff only about 5 seconds.  It melts FAST!  Then I squeezed some of each onto the top of my chocolate pecans.

Next, I melted some red chocolate and added some Craisins and poured that on top of my marshmallow cream/Nutella.

All that went back in the freezer for a while.  It needs to be frozen solid to help it release from the bowl.  I think I had mine in for about an hour while I was working on other things. When I was ready I turned the bowl over, pushed on the sides and top and my chocolate popped out.  I took a parring knife and trimmed the access chocolate.

I inserted a plastic stick in the middle that had a balloon on it.  I used a filet knife and drilled out a hole and inserted the stick.  (Be sure to wash the stick before inserting into the chocolate).  I took different colored chocolates and put each into ziplock bags, microwaved for 1 minute, kneaded the bag, and microwaved for another 30 seconds.  I cut a small tip out of one corner and began to pipe on some different decorations.  To get the ruffled effects of the leaves, cut the bag inwards just a bit instead of cutting the tip off.  Do a few practice squeezes on your wax paper to get the right effect.

I cut out a smaller circle from one of my cake disks to fit my cake.  I took some more of my blue chocolate and piped some on the bottom of the cake to keep it from sliding off the cardboard. All this was slipped into a small bag and tied up with ribbon.

I was working on another birthday gift at the same time and had a few Nutter Butters left that were covered in the same chocolate.  I took some of my chocolates and remelted and put my message on the cookies.  I had a little trouble with the holes I cut in my bags of chocolates (plus a double espresso) so it looks like a 4 year old did them but I like having an edible birthday message!!

And when I made the card I added what was inside.

Happy Birthday, Megan!!!  : )
